The Samuel C. Johnson IMAX Theater at the National Museum of Natural History in Washington DC is one of several IMAX theaters in the nation's capital. At 66 feet high and 90 feet wide this is the city's largest theater. It is very popular for its regular showing of 3D films, as well as feature-length blockbusters, such as the Harry Potter movies. As with all IMAX theaters, though, most of its films are 40 to 45-minute, spectacularly filmed documentaries. Documentaries shown here have the benefit of state-of-the-art six-channel digital surround sound and often, though not always, have to do with dinosaurs, animals and other aspects of natural history. On Friday nights, visitors can enjoy an "IMAX & Jazz Café" event. Following an IMAX screening, head over to the Atrium Café for food, drinks and live jazz.
