Historical and Military Attractions in Washington, DC

As the nation's capital, Washington DC is filled with military significance. From memorials to museums, you can learn more about the true facts and stories behind America's many military engagements and wars, as well as pay tribute to our many soldiers who have bravely served our country over the centuries, by visiting the local military attractions.

The National Mall is the ideal starting point for exploring the military attractions in Washington DC. The area is comprised of a narrow patch of green grass that stretches several blocks long, from the US Capitol to the Washington Monument. Here, you will find the location of several war memorials, including the World War II Memorial, the Korean War Veterans Memorial, the Vietnam Veterans Memorial, and others. It is also the sight of the Martin Luther King's famous "I Have A Dream" speech in 1963.

Perhaps the most well-known of military monuments is the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in the National Mall. This "wall" honors those soldiers whose lives were lost in the Vietnam War. Altogether, the memorial features over 58,000 names on it. On-site you will also find a touching statue of three serviceman, as well as the Vietnam Women's Memorial. Not far from the Vietnam Veterans Memorial is the Korean War Veterans Memorial. This memorial features 19 statues of soldiers on patrol from the various branches of the military, as well as a 164-foot long mural showing images of service men and women on duty during the Korean War.

The National Museum of American History is also a part of the National Mall, and is one of the more popular Smithsonian museums. This museum celebrates America's military battles and conflicts, and also explores political history and even pop culture. Not only does this museum give you great insight into the military history of the US through its exhibits and displays, but it also serves as a vivid reminder of what our many soldiers over the years have fought so valiantly to protect.

At the African American Civil War Museum, you will find dozens of exhibits, displays, and artifacts attesting to the untold story of the African American soldiers who fought on both sides of the Civil War. This museum tells the untold story of so many soldiers who fought proudly in the Civil War.

Washington DC is a popular destination for those visitors wanting to explore the country's military history from before the country was founded through the present.
