Old Town Alexandria near Washington, DC

On your next trip to the Washington, DC area, make some time to explore the unique historic town of Old Town Alexandria, which sits just across the Potomac River from Washington DC. Alexandria served as a vital port throughout the country's early history, with a history dating back from the colonial era starting in 1749. This vibrant and bustling port has turned into a revitalized waterfront area today, with gorgeous colonial-style houses, shops, churches, and other structures lined up picturesquely on cobblestone streets.

You can spend a full afternoon exploring the sights and sounds of Old Town Alexandria, visiting its many historic sites and museums. Your visit to Old Town Alexandria should start at the Ramsay House Visitor Center, where you can locate a city map as well as brochures and other information on the various attractions and museums in the city. Then head over to the Gadsby's Tavern Museum, which served at one time as the temporary residence of such US legends as George and Martha Washington, Thomas Jefferson, and John Adams. Gadbsy's today services early-American style cuisine, and offers 30-minute guided tours of the museum where you can view a vast collection of 18th century antiques.

Then take a tour of the historic Lee-Fendall House, which was the home of Robert E. Lee, as well as several other generations of Lee's. Among the many items you will see during a tour of the Lee-Fendall House are a gorgeous antique doll collection and Harry Lee's eulogy of George Washington.

The Lyceum is a city historical museum that offers free admission. You can take a self-guided tour of the Lyceum to explore a wide range of the city's historical artifacts. This museum also features a gift shop full of great souvenirs and mementos. Within walking distance of the Lyceum is the Confederate Soldier, a bronze sculpture marking the site where 800 soldiers gathered during the Civil War.

Other notable attractions in the city include the Stabler-Leadbeater Apothe Shop, the Old Presbyterian Meeting House where a marker commemorates the Unknown Soldier of the Revolutionary War, the Torpedo Factory, and others.
