The African American Civil War Memorial Freedom Foundation & Museum in Washington DC honors the memory of African American soldiers who participated in the Civil War, fighting not only for their flag, but for their own freedom.
Using photographs, historical documents and audio visual tools, the museum shares their stories with visitors while compiling information in their ongoing research into African American history.
The museum has a variety of exhibits for visitors to interact with such as the permanent installation, Slavery to Freedom: Civil War to Civil Rights, displaying the African American struggle for freedom. Visitors can also find a descendants registry where more than 2,000 ancestory records of soldiers from the United States Colored Troops and search a computer database for information on individual soldiers and the major Civil War battles fought.
Visitors interested in the museum will also want to travel just a few blocks away to check out the African American Civil War Memorial and its Spirit of Freedom statue, the nation's only monument to these soldiers. More than 209,000 names are inscribed on plaques near the sculpture.
Come and commemorate the lives and courage of the soldiers who fought for our country so long ago.
