Chesapeake & Ohio Canal National Historical Park in Potomac, MD
The Chesapeake & Ohio Canal National Park once was once known as the C&O canal, which transported goods such as coal and lumber to the communities and businesses along the Potomac River. Measuring 184.5 miles long, the canal has many areas for recreation, hiking and biking in the area. Special events at the canal happen regularly during the Canal Pride Days where over 100 revitalization and stewardship projects are designed for people to enjoy the outdoors and mingle with new people, while showing pride for the Historical Park.
Tourists can take a ride down the canal in a fully restored, mule powered boat which can take people through sections. Six visitors centers in various locations along the canal cater to tourist needs and inform people about any upcoming events or recreation that can be done in the area. The park sees over 3 million visitors per year, mostly for recreational purposes. It is estimated that over 35,000 laborers were used in the creation of the canal, which was left unfinished. It was almost turned into an automobile expressway, but that idea was also decided against.
The history behind the canal can also be told in the visitors center where an educational and historical significance is focused on. Considered to be obsolete before its construction, the canal still suffers damage from flooding, which makes it difficult to keep the canal maintained. The summer months are the best time to recreationally or educationally visit the canals, as the weather is the most favorable to explore the park.
