Gettysburg National Park near Washington, DC

In all of the events that make up American History, the one that defines the nation's greatest struggle and ability to overcome adversity is perhaps none other than the Civil War. With over a million causalities, the war's most brutal battle was easily the Battle of Gettysburg, which saw over 51,000 deaths. In order to commemorate those who were lost and to serve as an illustration of this period of US history, the Gettysburg National Park has been established at the site of the battlefield to preserve the facts and legends of this historical battle and to provide the public an enlightening and enriching experience.

The park offers a wide range of activities, programs, and attractions that are meant to involve as much contextual history as possible.  For the summer months of June to August, Gettysburg National Park offers a wonderful assortment of ranger guided programs, illustrating battle history and the medical practices utilized during the Civil War, and even incorporates a few programs for the children as well.

There are also several exhibits that showcase some of the unique items and equipment related to the life of a Civil War Soldier. These even feature some of the items made by soldiers who often had to deal with long, strenuous periods when stationed at camps.

Last but not least, there is the new Gettysburg Museum and Visitor Center that offers displays and information that allows visitors a glimpse into the period of the Civil War and the Battle of Gettysburg, which serves as a major source of historical information that is certain to please both friends and family alike.
