Located on the
National Mall, the Korean War Veterans Memorial honors the members of the military, who served, and more specifically—the prisoners of war and those that lost their lives in the Korean War. The Korean War Veterans Memorial is located near the
Lincoln Memorial, and the
Vietnam Veterans Memorial. All the branches of the military—Army, Navy, Marines and Air Force—are represented in the 19 statues that depict soldiers on patrol. Over 7 feet in height, the larger than life statues dressed for combat, have a solemn appearance, and at night when the lights are on, they look almost ghostly. The statues are amazingly realistic because the artist designed them from actual photographs of military personnel in action. The memorial honors all the personnel, from the medics, the radio officers, the soldiers and the dogs that assisted them.
Each year millions of visitors come by the
National Mall to pay their respects to the men and women who fought and died for our country. You can tour the
National Mall for free and visit not only the war memorials, but also the National Museum of Art, the
Smithsonian Institution, and many other venues.
