Old Ebbitt Grill in Washington, DC, is an upscale fresh food saloon style eatery frequented by politicians, journalists, celebrities, theatergoers, residents, and tourists alike. The restaurant also caters to DC workers with its takeout service.
The grill is adjacent to the white house and boasts of the famous patronage, including past presidents such as Grant, Cleveland, Harding, and Theodore Roosevelt. The Old Ebbitt Grill was established in 1856 and is decorated in a beaux-arts décor with velvet and mahogany booths, bars, and marble and glass furnishings.
The general atmosphere of the grill is casual and there is no particular dress code. You can purchase the grill's chocolate cake serving 10-15 people for a special event or bring your own for a minimal fee. Held on the Friday and Saturday evening before Thanksgiving Weekend, the Grill's hosts Washington's most famous Oyster Riot, a smashing time of fun, wine drinking and of course the consumption of thousands of oysters! Nearly 1000 people a night pack the bar, eat, drink, and enjoy the sweet sounds of the Mudcat local blues band.
The 2008 Oyster Riot will be held on November 16 and 17 allowing you to choose from 25 oyster varieties and an assortment of 400 wines. Patrons await the judge's decision for the international wine tasting competition; winning wines will be posted on the Old Ebbitt Grill's website.
