The U.S. Marine Corps War Memorial or the Iwo Jima Memorial was built to honor those US Marines who lost their lives defending the USA. The memorial is located across the Potomac River close to the
Arlington National Cemetery. Adjacent to the memorial is The Netherlands Carillon. You can get to the memorial from the Rosslyn Metro Station.
The memorial draws inspiration from a photograph taken by Joe Rosenthal, of a bunch of five marines and a hospital corpsman from the navy, hoisting the US flag on the Iwo Jima, an island situated 660 miles of Tokyo. This photograph received the Pulitzer Prize and is a reminder of one among the many historic battles fought in World War II.
The memorial is a sculpture of the flag raising scene and is 32 feet tall. The base of the sculpture is made of Swedish granite. The names of each and every principal US Marine Corp member are inscribed on the base along with the dates. The words "In honor and in memory of the men of the United States Marine Corps who have given their lives to their country since November 10, 1775" are inscribed at the base. The sculpture depicts the marines erecting a 60 foot flagpole made of bronze. At the end of the flagpole flutters a flag made of cloth that flies throughout.
The cost of the sculpture and the development of the site of $850,000 were met from donations received from US marines, former marines, Naval Service members Marine Corps reservists and friends of the Marine Corps. Public funds were not used at all.
It is an evocative tribute by the nation.
