The Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, DC, opened in 1982 is a national memorial of about 2 acres that honors men and women who responded to the call of the Nation. Close to the Lincoln Memorial, the Vietnam Veterans Memorial features a black granite wall that bears the names of 58,191 individuals who sacrificed their lives during the Vietnam War between1964 and 1973. These names are in chronological order with an alphabetical listing that enables visitors find the names they are looking for.
Designed by Maya Ying Lin, the entrance to the memorial shows a flagstaff and a life size bronze statue of three Vietnam soldiers sculpted by Frederick Hart of Washington. The flag flies from a 60-foot staff and the base bears the emblems of the five services. The Vietnam Women's Memorial nearby has the sculpture of two women attending to a soldier with a third woman kneeling nearby. Visitors to the memorial pay tribute through mementoes, some of which are displayed at the SmithsonianMuseum of American History.
The Vietnam Veteran's Memorial's walls are 246.75 feet long with 140 pilings. The height of the walls at the vertex is a little over ten feet. The granite for the wall was sourced from Bangalore, India and cut and polished at Vermont. The names of the soldiers were inscribed in Memphis. Each letter's height is 0.53 inches and goes 0.038 inches deep. A tour of the park, which is open on all days except on December 25, is an enlightening experience.
