Washington Monument in Washington, DC

The Washington Monument is a prominent and iconic obelisk in Washington DC, built in 1884.  The memorial is a Presidential Memorial erected to honor George Washington and designed by Robert Mills and subsequently redesigned by Thomas Casey.  Interestingly, the Washington Monument is the world's tallest stone structure and the world's tallest obelisk.  When the monument was completed, it was recognized as the world's tallest structure, until the completion of the Eiffel tower the following year.
The Washington Monument stands 555 feet tall.  The walls of the monument range vastly in thickness from fifteen feet to eighteen inches.  There are 897 steps to the observation area in the pyramid.  There is also an elevator to take visitors to the top where they can view the entirety of Washington DC through the pyramid windows.  A little known fact is that the cap of the monument was put on public display before being installed.  During this time, it was stepped over by visitors who would later state that they had "stepped over the top of the Washington Monument."
The Reflecting Pool is situated to the west of the monument and aptly reflects the beautiful Washington Monument.  The monument itself is shaped like an Egyptian obelisk.  Construction of the monument was interrupted by a lack of funds and by the American Civil War.  This interruption is evident in the faded coloring of the monument from the marble used before and after.
The Washington Monument Restoration Project was put into place in 1996 to help restore this national icon.  Target donated $1 million to the restoration efforts.  The project was completed in 2000.  It included a vast cleaning of the interior and exterior, as well as crack repairs.
